Maya Angelou Dies At 86

Maya Angelou has passed away at 86.

One of the most remarkable voices in American letters over the past 50 years, Angelou wrote poems and essays, taught at Wake Forest University and gave lectures worldwide and became a famous civil rights activist.

The beloved author's most popular work is likely "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings", her memoir of childhood in a segregated South which marked the first in a multi-volume autobiographical series.

A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and several honorary degrees, Angelou  recited her poem "On The Pulse of Morning" at Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993.

Her impressively versatile career also included dancing, singing, acting and playwriting.

Angelou had been in bad health and had lately called off an event in her honor; no official cause of death has been revealed.
